At the beginning of October, CM4all organized an internal hackathon. Before the event, all employees of the company were asked to contribute machine learning topics to work on as projects during the hackathon. The participants were mainly developers, but there were also proposals from the product management and design departments.
After an introduction by Cornel Schnietz, CTO of CM4all, the teams got organized to work on the proposed projects. Discussions quickly arose by the projectors, participants began to research and fingers flew over keyboards. Some teams tried to use existing modules and data sets from the Internet for their project vision. Others, on the other hand, initially processed data from their own company. Enthusiasm was mixed with frustration, but everyone worked with full commitment to the cause.
Over the course of three days, the participants worked on topics such as automatic image tagging or bot detection using clustering. However, the five teams did not focus on "shippable products," but rather acquiring as much knowledge as possible within the limited time period, so that the projects could later be developed profitably in CM4all's product development process.
